Drive Smart, Stay Safe
The UAE has strict traffic laws designed to keep everyone safe. Understanding these rules before you start driving will help you avoid fines and ensure a stress-free rental experience. Here’s your complete guide.
Speed Limits
Urban Areas
Generally 60-80 km/h. Watch for variable speed limit signs near schools (40 km/h during school hours) and residential areas.
Main Highways
Sheikh Zayed Road and main highways typically 100-120 km/h. Always check posted signs as limits can change.
Abu Dhabi Highway
Maximum 140 km/h on some sections – the fastest legal speed in the UAE.
Buffer Zone
Radar cameras typically have a 20 km/h buffer (so 120 km/h limit = flash at 141 km/h). However, don’t rely on this – stick to posted limits.
Traffic Fines
UAE traffic fines are significant. Here are some common violations:
- Speeding: AED 300 – 3,000 depending on severity
- Running a red light: AED 1,000 + 12 black points
- Using phone while driving: AED 800 + 4 black points
- Not wearing seatbelt: AED 400 (driver), AED 400 (passenger)
- Parking violations: AED 200 – 1,000
- Illegal U-turn: AED 500
The Black Points System
Traffic violations accumulate black points on your driving record. 24 points in 12 months results in license suspension. As a tourist, excessive violations can lead to rental termination and potential legal issues.
Alcohol: Zero Tolerance
The UAE has a ZERO tolerance policy for drinking and driving. Any trace of alcohol is illegal. Penalties include:
- Heavy fines (AED 20,000+)
- License suspension
- Vehicle impoundment
- Possible imprisonment
- Deportation for tourists
Salik (Toll System)
Dubai uses an automatic toll system with 8 gates. Each passing costs AED 5, automatically charged via your rental car’s Salik tag. Gates are located on:
- Sheikh Zayed Road (multiple gates)
- Al Maktoum Bridge
- Garhoud Bridge
- Al Barsha
- Airport Tunnel
Lane Discipline
Lane discipline is strictly enforced:
- Keep right except when overtaking
- Flash headlights to request passing (not aggressive, just standard practice)
- Never undertake (pass on the right)
- Use indicators for every lane change
Parking Rules
Paid Parking (RTA)
Blue signs indicate paid zones. Pay via RTA app, meters, or SMS. Free on Fridays and public holidays in most areas.
No Parking Zones
Black and yellow curbs = No stopping at any time. Your car can be towed immediately.
Emergency Situations
In case of an accident:
- Move vehicles to the side if possible
- Call police (999) for major accidents
- For minor accidents, use the Dubai Police app
- Exchange details with other parties
- Get a police report – required for insurance
- Contact NAPPA 24/7 hotline immediately
Remember: Safe driving isn’t just about avoiding fines – it’s about ensuring everyone reaches their destination safely. Enjoy your drive!
